The most common bridge configuration uses 2x8 or 2x6 treads attached to galvanized steel cables, with 5/4 decking boards running over top. This “two-layer” design might seem like extra work, but it’s been perfected for both performance and longevity. The parallel decking boards provide stiffness and reduce vertical “sag,” while the perpendicular treads give the bridge a lively, natural bounce underfoot . This can be compensated for with tighter cable tension, though that also increases load on your anchor trees or posts .

These designs offer visual openness but may not meet code requirements or provide the same level of protection as the standard kit. If your bridge will be used by children or needs to meet safety regulations, the full net-and-deck system is the way to go.
