Build Stronger From the Start: Introducing TISS™ Kits for New Treehouse Builds

Every great treehouse begins with its foundation — and unlike a conventional building, that foundation is alive.

Trees grow. They move in the wind. Their trunks expand over time. Different species have different structural characteristics, and no two trees present exactly the same building conditions. At the same time, modern treehouses have become larger, heavier and more ambitious than ever before.

Today’s projects can include multiple stories, enclosed living spaces, large decks, bridges, lofts, commercial amenities and even features such as hot tubs. All of that makes the connection between the structure and its supporting trees one of the most important considerations in the entire build.

Treehouse Supplies developed the Treehouse Integrated Support System™ (TISS™) to give builders another level of flexibility when designing those critical connections.

For new construction, TISS™ offers four purpose-built reinforcement kits:

These systems work alongside your primary Treehouse Attachment Bolts (TABs) or compatible fasteners, providing additional support when the design, loads, tree conditions or engineering requirements call for it.

Instead of treating the primary fastener as an isolated piece of hardware, TISS™ makes it part of a larger, integrated support system.

The result is a smarter way to approach demanding treehouse connections:

  • supporting the primary attachment from below with a strut, or
  • supporting the primary attachment from above with a suspension cable.

More Than a Bolt: An Integrated Treehouse Support System

The introduction of specialized Treehouse Attachment Bolts transformed modern treehouse construction by giving builders hardware capable of supporting substantial structures from carefully designed attachment points.

TISS™ represents the next step in that philosophy.

Rather than thinking about a TAB as an individual fastener, builders can think about the entire attachment as a system:

  • Primary fastener (TAB or Lag Bolt)
  • Support end.
  • Strut or suspension cable.
  • Secondary tree connection.
  • Adjustment hardware.

All working together as part of one engineered support strategy.

For builders planning ambitious new structures, that can mean greater design flexibility and more ways to address challenging tree geometry, concentrated loads and demanding structural requirements before construction ever begins.

Why Add TISS™ to a New Treehouse?

Not every treehouse requires additional reinforcement at every attachment point. But there are many situations where increasing the capacity and redundancy of a critical connection can be extremely valuable.

Treehouse Supplies recommends considering TISS™ reinforcement for applications including:

  • Multi-level treehouses
  • Projects with significant concentrated loads
  • Commercial treehouses
  • Treehouse vacation rentals
  • Projects with engineering or permitting requirements
  • Structures where one side carries substantially more load
  • Treehouses incorporating particularly heavy features
  • Smaller trees where TAB installation depth may be limited
  • Suitable trees with lower compression strength or localized cavities
  • Structures in high-wind environments where connections may experience increased dynamic loading

TISS™ gives designers, engineers and builders another tool for addressing these situations without abandoning the familiar TAB-based construction methods used throughout the professional treehouse industry.

And because the system is available in both Standard Duty and Heavy Duty configurations, reinforcement can be matched more closely to the hardware and demands of the project.

Strut or Suspension: Which Should You Choose?

This is one of the biggest advantages of the TISS™ concept: there isn’t one universal answer.

Every tree is different.

A straight, unobstructed trunk beneath a platform may provide an excellent location for a TISS™ Strut. Branches, walls, roofs or other structural components may make an overhead cable difficult to install. A strut underneath the platform may then be the simpler solution.

TISS™ Strut

Another tree might flare dramatically, fork beneath the structure or have architectural components occupying the ideal strut location. In that situation, an overhead TISS™ Suspension Anchor may provide a better reinforcement configuration.

The decision can depend on:

  • Tree diameter and species
  • Trunk angle
  • Branch locations
  • Platform elevation
  • TAB location
  • Structural loads
  • Architecture above and below the platform
  • Required clearances
  • Engineering requirements
  • Future inspection and maintenance access

And a complex treehouse doesn’t necessarily have to use only one type of reinforcement.

The larger idea behind an Integrated Support System is that builders have multiple compatible tools available for solving different structural conditions throughout the same project.

Standard Duty or Heavy Duty?

The same principle applies when choosing between Standard Duty and Heavy Duty TISS™ components.

The Standard Duty TISS™ kits are designed to integrate with Treehouse Supplies’ standard-duty fasteners.

The Heavy Duty TISS™ kits are designed to integrate with our heavy-duty fasteners.

The correct configuration should always be determined as part of the overall structural design rather than simply selecting the largest piece of hardware available.

Tree species, trunk diameter, fastener embedment, anticipated loads, attachment geometry and the overall design of the platform all matter.

For larger, commercial or unusually complex projects, consulting a qualified engineer experienced with tree-supported structures is strongly recommended.

Build for the Tree You Actually Have

Perhaps the greatest challenge of professional treehouse construction is also what makes it so rewarding:

There are no standardized foundations.

A conventional builder can start with drawings based around straight walls, level slabs and predictable dimensions. Treehouse builders start with trees.

A trunk may lean. A branch may occupy exactly the space where a structural member would normally go. One tree may be larger than another. The ideal platform elevation may intersect a fork. Loads may be concentrated heavily toward one side of the structure. Good treehouse hardware needs to accommodate those realities.

TISS™ gives builders another set of options for doing exactly that. If reinforcement from below makes sense, use a TISS™ Strut Kit. If reinforcement from above works better, use a TISS™ Suspension Anchor Kit.

If the project requires more substantial primary hardware, step up to the corresponding Heavy Duty TISS™ system.

It’s a flexible approach designed around the way professional treehouses are actually built.

Start Your Next Treehouse with TISS™

A great treehouse shouldn’t be designed around the limitations of its hardware. The hardware should give the builder more ways to create the right solution for the tree.

That’s the idea behind the Treehouse Integrated Support System™.

Support from below. Suspend from above. Choose the capacity that matches the project. And build the reinforcement into the treehouse from day one.
